There are moments when you photographing something that you think: "Wow - This is why I do this." And then there are times when you're looking thru the photos the next week looking for a couple to blog about when you realize, "I'm glad I was a part of this. I'm glad I'm able to give Eric & Christal a momento of their child's life that they will always have and remember. I'm glad to be a part of the growth of this new family and it simply overwhelms me." It may sound sappy, and it is, but as I post these pictures on my blog and on Facebook I've realized I'm a happier person when I'm working---and suprisingly to me, I come to really enjoy taking photos of newborns.

I'm just super grateful that Eric & Christal emailed me after seeing Baby Sedona's pictures. If you remember Sedona, you'll remember her father Dave Mills--the crew chief of Xtreme4. Well, Eric was one of our world record setting riders for that team and he's now a proud father to Chase Addison Elena Goetz born on June 25, 2009 with his lovely wife Christal Goetz.

This session was a unique one since Chase isn't really a new born anymore nor is she a toddler. Plus, she wasn't quite cooperating with us. So, we improvised. We got the shots we could (which I love) and then set up an additional session late on Monday night once Chase fell asleep. It worked. And I'm now proud to present, Miss Chase Addison Elena Goetz.

Cancer is her sign and Water is her element. Water indeed...she peed all over the place both sessions. It was hilarious. It just kept coming!

Diana & Jimmy:::MARRIED!!!

The second part of the whirlwind weekend took place in Old San Juan, PR at Diana & Jimmy's wedding (see Travis & Katie's Wedding for Part 1). Diana and I met back in December of last year when I was photographing Jen & Vikkal's wedding up in New Jersey at Liberty State Park. Diana & Jen have known each other for years and after playing the supporting role of maid of honor in Jen's wedding we began to talk of her up coming wedding in...PUERTO RICO!!! Um...yes, please. Actually it was perfect. My familiarity with Puerto Rico and Old San Juan thru La Vuelta, a 3 day 375 mile bike ride around the island, is what excited me most about this wedding. A ceremony on top of El Morro, a reception at the infamous Hotel El Convento downtown and a backdrop the likes that is unrivaled in many respects made this the highlight of my wedding season. Plus, we'll be in Puerto Rico, the home of the best frozen mojito I've ever had at the Parrot Club downtown. (My 2nd shooter, Sarah also thought the same thing).

So I sent Sarah down to San Juan the night before to ensure one of us would be there the day of considering I was flying in that morning from Philadelphia...and it was a picture perfect day. The clouds were great, ambient even better, it may have been a little humid, but no problem. What we didn't count on was the Arts Festival happening on the grounds of El Morro. Fine for us, but NOT OK for the guys trying to get to the wedding. Arts Festival=Traffic. Traffic=No Guys. YET...No Guys=Extra Time with the Girls walking around downtown. And that's what we did. AMAZING!!! I've never been more excited and happy to get the shots we did when the shit was hitting the fan, plus we still got great shots at the Fort. Doubly Good. :-)

Sarah & I were so lucky to be there. Thank you so much Diana & Jimmy for being such great people. Your love was infectious all evening long, despite a few hiccups along the way. (And Jimmy, best vows ever my man!) Congrats!

Take Away: Every wedding I try to come up with some idea that I would steal for my own wedding. This might be the type of cake or programs or something of that nature. And the winner is: The day of the wedding morning run followed by bagels and coffee. This is going to be an odd one, but I think I'm going to have to avoid the obvious call of the reception, even though it was the best sangria EVER! The winner is: Diana's Dad. This guy cracked me up all evening long. It was a party and he knew it, and he wanted you to know it as well. Diana, honestly, I felt as if you have James Bond's Dad as your father. And his choice of style that night was fantastic. So, to Mr. Liscinski, Diana and Jimmy--wonderful, wonderful day. I wish you all the best. xoxo

Travis & Katie:::MARRIED!!!

A whirlwind of a weekend. That's what best describes this weekend. Actually, a better description would be "a whirlwind of a week." Washington, DC to Ithaca, NY to Philadelphia, PA to San Juan, PR to Philadelphia, PA and back home to Washington, DC.

Hours of travel - 34

Mileage - I have know idea

Weddings - 2

Pints of Chocolate Milk drank while traveling - 4 (for some reason I love chocolate milk and car rides...weird).

Times I played the ROCKY soundtrack to keep me awake - 1.75

Laptops and hard drives that were stolen while traveling - 2

A whirlwind to say the least and it all begins with the wedding of Travis and Katie. Travis and Katie are just like Michelle and Brendan - members of the DC Tri Club. That's how we met, but now that I think about it, I can't remember exactly when we met. Travis and I have been training partners for some time now, but how that all began...it's tough to say. I do know I've helped them move into their new home, Travis helped me move into mine, and he's even accompanied me on the last 20 miles of a 50 mile race I ran last year. So, you put that all together, I guess it just makes sense that I would photograph their wedding.

But where to have the wedding? Annapolis? DC? NY? Well, after what sounded like an eternal search for the right venue - Ithaca, NY was the choice and it couldn't have been a better choice. You must understand, when a member of the Capitol Hill DC Tri Club clan has a wedding, it's not just a day, but an adventure. People will bike, people will swim and people will run. It's a training weekend with a wedding thrown in the middle. And Ithaca provided one heck of a landscape. You may all know the slogan: "Ithaca is Gorges." Well...it is. And I'm not sure if Travis made a deal with someone, but the weather was AMAZING! Add a few relatives from miles away and an extremely cool venue and you have the makings of a fantastic weekend. Plus, the John Joseph Inn provided the perfect backdrop. John & Elizabeth were extremely helpful in every facet of the day understanding exactly what needed to be done to make a perfect day happen. Not to mention, John was instrumental in getting the picture in the sunflower field. Thank you John!

What made the wedding great was that is was a weekend. It wasn't a wedding day, but a wedding weekend. Memories won't be contained to just one single event but from several events throughout the 3 days everyone was up there. (OK, I was only up there for 2) But nonetheless, this approach to the wedding provides an ease which most weddings don't have. So if you're in the market to be married and looking for a place, I highly recommend Ithaca and the Hamilton Farm at the John Joseph Inn & Elizabeth Restaurant.

Take Away: Every wedding I try to come up with some idea that I would steal for my own wedding. This might be the type of cake or programs or something of that nature. And the winner is: The day of the wedding morning run followed by bagels and coffee. For me, being a runner first (who loves hills) and a photographer second this was such an awesome morning. We didn't go out too hard, but the terrain provided all the difficulty we needed. I was in oxygen debt immediately, but with a mid-run respite at one of the gorges and a later pit stop at the local farmer's market, this run wasn't just social in nature but a wonderful introduction into what Ithaca has to offer. I would definitely come back and visit and the morning run should be a staple in all weddings. Good call Travis!

Michelle & Brendan:::MARRIED!!!

I can't quite recall how Michelle and I met...I think it may have been thru some mutual friends in the DC Tri Club, but I do remember spending a lovely holiday dinner years ago at Michelle's house and having a wonderful time. Ever since then, Ms. Michelle has been a constant voice in my blogging life. A comment here, a "Like" there, and in the end it meant one thing. Michelle became a big fan of my work for a long, long time and she always said I was her photographer should that day ever arise. Well, I was on tour with the Kennedy Center with NOBODY'S PERFECT when the call came. Actually, I think it was an email. It said, very simply, "Guess who's off the market?" Also implying, "I guess I need a photographer." :-)

The day and the weekend were great. We were on a secluded property in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains at the Crimora Mine Retreat. Crimora Mine Retreat is this luxurious log home built a couple of years ago. The private cabin is located on 150 acres of woodland in the Blue Ridge Mountains and being bordered by the Shenandoah National Park and a few miles from the Appalachian Trail, it provides the perfect place for a getaway with family and friends. You can enjoy fishing, hiking, kayaking, and canoeing all while soaking up breathtaking views from this stunning locale. But most importantly, you can have a wedding. And that's what we did.

Take Away: Every wedding I try to come up with some idea that I would steal for my own wedding. This might be the type of cake or programs or something of that nature. And the winner is: Brendan & Michelle. Yes, I know they are people, but as people, friends, drinkers and cheerleaders these two are great. It's really the last part that makes this pick so special to me. From the moment I handed them the engagement photos to the moment I spent in their living room last Wednesday night looking thru every single photo on their 50in TV (Um, way better than anything I have) they have had nothing but a ball of praise for me and my work. If the two of them opened an ad agency I would hire them in a second. What I like best about this enthusiasm was, and I might be speculating here, is that Brendan wasn't too concerned with the photography at first. In fact, he may have been luke warm with the whole concept---understandable, we had only met once before at some DC Tri Club event I think. But when you go over to someone's house and they keep wanting to show you photos they took on the honeymoon incorporating tips and tricks they've learned by looking at your work...well, that is great. Brendan and Michelle are human sound boards in which they sing to the hill tops of your praise. So, if you're listening Brendan & Michelle, and I know that you are, THANK YOU. You are the model client. You have made this experience wonderful. Thank you for inviting me into your home, inviting to your wedding and most importantly, inviting me into your life together.

A Wintery Wonderland Engagement

Last Friday night was probably one of the most memorable nights I can remember in recent past. Lunch at Teaism, Photo Safari at the National Portrait Gallery, dinner at Sonoma Wine Bar on Capitol Hill with 3 of the greatest wedding photographers and a surprise engagement in our restaurant!!! Are you kidding me? We just happen to show up at my favorite restaurant, I just happen to know the host who's working that night, she just happens to know I'm a photographer with 3 other wedding photographers in tow and she just happens to know the gentleman at table 31 is about to propose to his fiancee. Too perfect.

Enter Matt and Meg. Apparently, Matt lives in Richmond and Meg lives just across the Potomac and they had their first date a Sonoma awhile back. Well here they are again, at the very same table they had their first date all those months ago. And you don't believe in fate, you might not grasp what this moment meant to me. Not only did we have our cameras, but we also had two assistants (read: friends who aren't photographers), lighting equipment and the makings of the most picturesque evening imaginable.

So, what would you do? Well, if you said introduce yourself to the couple and offer them a free engagement session with 4 amazing photographers outside in the snow, you'd be right on the money. Taking a few liberties and intruding at the right moment, I went over and introduced myself to Matt and Meg, congratulated them both and proceeded to tell them our game plan for the evening. They were in shock and gave us a resounding thumbs up! We finished our dinner (Matt and Meg sent us a bottle of Prosecco to top the night off----thank you guys!) and proceeded into the night with a mission at hand: Make this night one the Matt and Meg will never forget. What ended up happening was they made a night for us that WE will never forget. Matt and Meg, thank you for sharing with us this moment, thank you for being so open to new things and thank you for being the picture of a couple that I one day will hopefully become a part of. :-)

The Jerseys of CLIMATE RIDE 2009

Whenever I photograph a bike ride or even when I participate in one, I'm always intrigued by the jerseys. Tons and tons of different jerseys. Some are funny, some are advertising, some are replicas of professional cycling teams and some even depict your favorite superhero. In any case, they are fascinating! The jersey is a badge of honor to most who wear them exclaiming from the rooftops of there accomplishments. It could be one's alma mater or another bike ride they finished, it could be a charity ride they helped raise money for or it could they state from which they ride. Whatever it is, they are an eye catching article of clothing which I deemed this year worthy enough of photographing. So here now I present to you the CYCLING JERSEYS of CLIMATE RIDE 2009. Enjoy!

Brita Climate Ride 2009 - Day 5 (Leakin Park, MD to Washington, DC)

Day 5 (60 miles): This morning we’ll rise early and head straight for the heart of Washington DC. After several miles winding through Maryland, we will stop for lunch in Silver Spring, MD before hopping on the Capitol Crescent Trail, a popular rail-trail, created by the Rails to Trails Conservancy. We gather at the tail end of Constitution Avenue, and then begin our final leg to the Capitol, passing the Washington Monument and various museums which house our Nation’s treasures. We will congregate on the Senate Lawn, with the Capitol in the background, where we will make a statement about the need for climate change action and access to renewable energy.

It's the final day of Climate Ride 2009 and I'm already dreading being home. OK, maybe I get to watch GLEE (best show ever!...well, at least for this season) and maybe I'll shower a little more (or not), but what I'm most concerned about is the overwhelming void that has been filled by this ride. Everywhere you look you can't help but be overwhelmed with a sense of excitement and energy that these people create. The environment is their passion and it's intoxicating. Each individual, whether they are an expert in their field or an average joe who's just concerned about their children's future, has committed 5 days of their life to bike from NY to DC and also raise money (at least $2400) and awareness about the environment. The beneficiary? Focus the Nation, Rails to Trails Conservancy, Clear Air Cool Planet, you, me and the world.

If you're skeptical of riding with these folks, don't be. I can assure you it will be one of the most inspirational and momentous events in your life. And if you're from the West Coast, I'm pleased to announce Climate Ride now has a California tour that will begin next year in May. Please join us and change the world.

Brita Climate Ride 2009 - Day 4 (Susquehanna River to Leakin Park in Baltimore, MD)

Day 4 (62 miles): We begin the day by pedaling across a long bridge crossing the mighty Susquehanna. The Susquehanna flows furiously in the springtime and is a mere trickle by mid-summer. After a few miles we enter Maryland and ride past beautifully manicured farms and stunning country estates. It’s hard to imagine that Washington DC is so close. This is the area that DC cyclists prize—the roads are quiet and curvy and the manicured countryside reflects the long history of the Mid-Atlantic region. Soon we enter the small towns that surround DC. The roads become busier and we realize that we are approaching our destination—Baltimore. Tonight we camp in a sprawling 300-acre city park on the edge of Baltimore called Leakin Park. The Outward Bound School, which calls Leakin Park home, has invited us to camp and use their facility.

After an amazing Day 3, Day 4 may have proved to be a let down in terms of photos, but with the new route after lunch, some inventive riders and a sense of play, Day 4 was an all-around fun filled day without the pressure of "getting every single person."

Brita Climate Ride 2009 - Day 3 (Valley Forge, PA to the Susquehanna River, PA)

Day 3 (69 miles): Today we’ll wind through Pennsylvania hill country into Lancaster County, famed for its epic cycling. Our day begins with rolling hills through French Creek State Park and a visit to St. Peters, a riverside hamlet composed of quaint homes and imposing granite boulders. After passing through a few more Pennsylvania towns we turn to the south and enter quintessential Amish country. Here you’ll share the road with horses and buggies. Silos and small farms dot the hillsides and valleys, and small Amish towns serve up ice cream and plenty of charm to visitors. Soon our route enters the rolling hills that flank the mighty Susquehanna River. Tonight we camp at a traditional Mennonite summer camp tucked in the trees.

There is no day quite like Day 3 on Climate Ride. It is probably the most beautiful countryside you'll see in the Northeast and possibly in the country. With rolling hills, Amish farms and plenty of buggies barreling by over 20mph, if you don't like today, you don't like life. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking for today.

Day 3 encouraged all riders who commute to work to ride in their "work" clothes. I think Josh was the winner by a mile. This shot was the one and only shot I got off...and it was complete luck. Both groups separated only 50 ft. later. Favorite part: the cow is actually looking at me. Again, right time, right place. :-) Not long after a beautiful day of hills and countryside, mother nature was back to say hello. "What rain?" Ah, the creamery! Such good ice cream. Brita Climate RIde 2009 - Day 2 (Princeton, NJ to Valley Forge)

Day 2 (60 miles): Today brings more rural farming country and an insider’s view into New Jersey’s prolific growing season. We depart from Princeton and continue along quiet, winding roads until we reach the Delaware River, the boundary between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Our last stop before crossing the river is the charming town of Lambertville. Antiques shops, restaurants, and art galleries line the historical avenues, and riverside cafes dot the Delaware River shoreline. After crossing the river, you enter Lambertville’s sister city on the Pennsylvania side, New Hope. Soon we are pedaling along Pennsylvania’s quiet roads to Doylestown, where you will have a chance to try one of the local restaurants. After a few more miles of pedaling, you reach the Schuylkill Bike Path, an eight mile cruise along the Schuylkill River to reach Valley Forge Historic State Park. A quiet road winds you through Valley Forge, where you can pedal past the beautifully preserved homes of General Washington and his troops.

Day 2 was a heroic effort by all in the early morning. After nearly a 12 hour rainfall, the riders and staff all headed out with smiles on their faces under a gloomy and rain spitting sky. Cloudy, check. Rainfall, check. Terrible opportunities for pictures, check.

I was worried. I was also excited. Last year's Climate Ride was absolutely perfect in terms of weather so a little rain so I thought maybe a little rain could provide some new challenges and different looks to Day 2's photos. Well it did. What is also caused, was a ton of flat tires. All in all, Day 2 began wet, dried up, became sunny, became wet, turned picturesque and ultimately stayed soggy for evening. But it didn't dampen the spirits of this troop and Day 2's speakers put an exclamation point on a triumphant 60 mile journey.

Brothers in arms...brothers in rain gear. Two of the youngest riders in the group, age 12 and 14, are accompanied by their parents and their grandma too. Climate Ride is certainly a family affair as is the environment itself.

The postcard will become a big theme throughout the ride for me.

Brita Climate Ride 2009 - Day 1 (New York City to Princeton, NJ)

Day 1 (45 miles): You and your fellow Climate Riders will depart from Manhattan’s spectacular urban landscape, riding en masse through New York City. A ferry awaits you to transport our group across the Hudson River to Atlantic Highlands, NJ. After disembarking from the ferry, we hop on our bikes and pedal into rural countryside, revealing why New Jersey is called the Garden State. Small farms abound and you will enjoy quiet roads on the way to tonight’s destination, Princeton, NJ, home to Princeton University.

Another year has flown by and I'm already back behind the wheel for another go at Climate Ride. This year's version will only be bigger and better, but with a smaller impact on the environment. In terms of those "green folks" -- a smaller carbon footprint. There's even a new route for the 2nd half of day 4 which I'm excited about, but even more exciting to me is the fact that I'm actually at the start this year in NY. Last year I joined the group late on Day 1 in Princeton, but now I'm downtown with the most exciting and uplifting bike ride ever: BRITA CLIMATE RIDE 2009.

What do climate change, energy, and the environment have to do with me? Can I make a difference?

It’s on the news every night, but most Americans still do not feel connected to the issue that could cause billions of dollars in environmental damage, massive societal upheaval, war, and famine. New research shows that if present trends continue, "the total cost of climate change will be as high as 3.6 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). Four global warming impacts alone -- hurricane damage, real estate losses, energy costs, and water costs -- will come with a price tag of 1.8 percent of U.S. GDP, or almost $1.9 trillion annually (in today's dollars) by 2100." That is why it is vital to raise awareness and increase our understanding of climate change. You can begin by supporting the work of Climate Ride’s non-profit beneficiaries.

Brita Climate Ride 2009

How far would you pedal for a new energy future? It's amazing to think that it's already been year since I was last with the courageous and inspiring group that is the Brita Climate Ride.

So what is CLIMATE RIDE you ask?

A fully supported, 5-day fundraising bike ride from New York City to Washington DC, September 26 - 30, 2009 starts tomorrow. It's the ride of a lifetime through some of the East Coast's most beautiful countryside. The youngest rider on Climate Ride is an 8th grader from Seattle and the oldest rider is an 82-year-old woman from NYC who has been a bike commuter for 50 years. Are you kidding me? Along with them will be some two hundred other cyclists for great food, world class biking, and the chance to meet and network with leaders in climate change, renewable energy and environmental causes as they make their way to historic Washington, DC!

Climate change is a serious issue and we need a wake up call--changing our lifestyles to include more biking and less oil-induced gluttony is not the end of the world! And that is what Climate Ride is trying to do. Turn off the oil I.V. drip, ditch your car and join us for a week of pedal power! If you can't drop everything at the last second, and I'm sure that is most of you, why not do your part to help out the environment while you live thru vicariously thru these hard working, fundraising cyclists and continue to check out the blog for updates throughout the week.

Emmy "Frankenteen" Whitworth

Ok, can anyone can guess what "Frankenteen" is in reference to???---If you the answer, realize that you are cool, put the answer in comments section, give us your favorite character and if you can...give us YOUR favorite quote. If not, well then, you're just not hip nor are you into what Emmy and I think is the best new show on TV.

Now, I'm not saying Emmy is "freakishly tall", she's just taller than me (who isn't) and she makes me feel like a "woodland creature!" (That was another quote from the show) "They say it takes more certainty than talent to be a star. Just look at John Stamos." (quote #4) And with star potential and a fun personality to boot, Emmy is one heck of a 14-year old ready to take the acting world by storm, and as an added boon, she can sing. She also "won her first dance competition when I was three months old." (quote #5)

Emmy was introduced to me thru my brother Kevin. Both were working at The Shakespeare Theatre Company last year, Kevin in the Roman reps (Anthony & Cleopatra and Julius Caesar) and Emmy in the Imaginary Invalid at the Lansburgh Theatre. Now I don't know about you, but I'm not too familiar with too many teenagers who can say they've been on stage in a professional show at The Shakespeare Theatre. That just goes to show Emmy might be the female version of Josh Grobin. Now if you're asking "Who's JOSH GROBIN!? Kill Yourself! He's an angel sent down from the heavens to deliver platinum albums unto us!" (#6) Let's she what she's made of.

Global Electric Motorcars, a Chrysler company, has been in operation for ten years. Located in Fargo, North Dakota, Global Electric Motorcars manufactured its first vehicle in April 1998, a 48-volt GEM car that accommodated two passengers and had a top speed of 20 mph. Less than two months later, a significant breakthrough occurred in the market as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) designated a new class of motor vehicle, the low-speed vehicle, also known as the Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV). The low-speed vehicle class allowed GEM cars to be driven on public roads if they met certain safety criteria such as having safety belts, headlamps, windshield wipers, and safety glass. ITU World Championships

The Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series is the top level of competition in the sport of triathlon.

On June 21st age group triathletes and elite triathletes from around the world raced back-to-back through the heart of Washington, DC. The spectacular, one-of-a-kind backdrop of the nation's capital welcomed competitors past its monuments, memorials and museums as triathletes compete on car-free roads through the DC.

Elite athletes compete in the Series, held in seven iconic cities around world including Hamburg, Kitzbühel, London and Washington, DC, and will finish with the Grand Final at the Gold Coast, Australia. As the Series' only North American stop, Washington, DC, welcomed age group and elite athletes from around the world to race on Pennsylvania Avenue, America's Main Street.

The beauty of having a race with such a high profile in your own backyard is that we get to race the same course, volunteer and watch these elite athletes (most of whom were in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing) and most importantly...take photos of the best short course triathletes in the world.

It's amazing that without a press pass and some sweet looking cameras, I'm allowed to go wherever I want. :-)

The 1st casualty of the race. This guy's tire flew off turning the corner, went out of control and then hit the curb flying off the bike. Luckily he landed on the grass.

Mavic provided tire/bike support throughout the race and they were unbelievably fast. When a rider needs a tire change they make sure the athlete gets their tire back by putting tags on the wheels with their names. Athletes don't make a ton of money so, every bit helps.

The 2nd casualty of the race. This guy had some sort of GI distress. He pulled off and took a break. The Capitol Police in the background tried to help, but he just picked up his bike and walked back.

Racing at such high speeds overheats the engine. Water dowsing is a typical practice among the elites whenever they have the chance.

You can't win this race unless you know how to run. Off the bike Emma Moffatt of Australia and Lisa Norden of Sweden lead the race with a sizable lead. Emma finished 1st, Lisa...13th. You need to be a good runner.

Baby Sedona

Meet Sedona. A bundle of joy, a cute little girl and the most excited and intense "SMILE" face I've ever seen. Last Sunday the Laura and Dave came by with Sedona for her close-up and was she ever ready (take a look at the outtakes). You might remember Dave from RAAM 2008 as he played the role of Crew Chief extremely well. The guy in all the pictures riding shotgun was Dave...he was also the guy that never slept for 6 days. Dave's also the magic behind the "Kip Pierson Photography" logo you see at the bottom of every picture. If you ever need any help in the graphic design world, you need to contact Dave---he's simply amazing and brilliant!

There are events and there are races, and then there are epic rides. One day, one ride, 200 miles. Now in its 5th year, Total 200 has grown each year attracting some of the craziest and most thrill seeking cyclists in the Metropolitan DC area. Starting at dawn and not ending 'til dusk (there's a few exceptions here), 59 cyclists left Capitol Hill early July 11th, 2009 traveling 100 miles down to the southern tip of Maryland (Point Lookout Park), had lunch, and turned right back around and came home. Compared to years past, the weather was perfect. With a rider finisher rate of 85% it was one of our highest percentages to date and we now boast an alumni base of over 90 riders who have completed the journey in our first 5 years. And next year will once again be our biggest year yet: we're looking to make it even bigger and better. Our one and only tip: STARTING TRAINING NOW.

On a serious note, we are super excited to announce that we were able to donate almost $3,000 to our charity: The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (Save the Bay Foundation).

Thanks to all who helped out this year: You made a difference.

Baby Ian

It's a busy time of year for us photographers. Weddings, anniversaries, sporting events and of course, new-borns. So needless to say, the Kilpatrick's and I were having a little difficulty fitting in a session, but we finally found some time this past weekend. Well, Ian Kilpatrick isn't a new-born anymore, he's almost 6 months old now, but a star nonetheless. With a cute little face and beautiful blue eyes, Stephanie and David have a precious little boy who I think is going to be an up and coming model on this blog for years to come. Thanks to David, Steph and Ian for hanging out this weekend. I had a blast...even though I may have had children's songs in my head the rest of the day long. :-)

Brian & Malia:::MARRIED!!!

"Ah, San Diego. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago." But today, it meant that Brian and Malia were getting married. Brian and I met a couple of years ago thru our mutual friend Mr. Chad Lewis and became better acquainted for Chad's Bachelor Beer Run Party. Seeing that all of us were triathletes and marathoners, someone thought that the idea of bar hopping and drinking beer was a good idea. So clearly, if we ran between every bar ( and I mean "run" not "jogging") that would make this good idea even better. When we arrived back at Chad's for more drinking and a BBQ, we were in rare form. Our next encounter came up in Massachusetts at the Bucksteep Manor last May when I was shooting Chad & Kirsten's Wedding. Apparently, Brian was so enamored with the photography that he just had to hire me. (That's not exactly true, but that's what I'm telling myself) However it happened, I'm grateful Brian gave me a call.

Brian & Malia. One went to school in San Diego, the other at the school I despise the most...the University of Michigan, and despite that gigantic shortcoming, Malia looked stunning yesterday. Armed with the trimmed version of the original veil her Mother wore on her wedding night and even her original garder belt (she didn't not wear that one...from what I understand, she forgot to wear it) Malia was glowing. It's not hard when your wedding is on the beach!!! Yey!!! Sand, sun, wedding, cake and booze. What more could you ask for? NO RAIN??? You've got it. Throw in an acapella song sung by the groom's old singing group and a couple of the most energetic kids I've ever seen, and you have an remarkable and unforgettable event...Brian and Malia's wedding.

Congratulations you two. Enjoy your honeymoon in Australia and enjoy your new life together. I'm very happy to have been a part. Cheers.

They attempted to hang the sign by taping it up, but it didn't work. I think it has more charm this way.

This was a great idea. No bridesmaid dresses, no tuxedos. Just a swatch for a paint store and instructions: "But a shirt of dress in this color scheme." Practical. And if there's one thing about Brian and Malia, Brian will tell you, it's that they are both pratical.

This would be my favorite shot. In order to make sure the ring bearers didn't lose the rings, they were safety pinned to the turtles. Cute.

Here's a tip for all you soon to be newlyweds. Allow time for photos before the wedding. It will allow you to get to the reception much sooner to be with your friends who have traveled such a long way to be with you and it also provides photography insurance. Insurance from the unrelenting weather. At 3 o'clock we had unbelievable blue skies and great light. At 5 o'clock that light and sky were gone. The clouds rolled in and poof! Nothing. Had we not shot these pictures before the wedding, the outcome would have been much different. It's a safety net and a good one.

Ah, the In-Laws.

The more you shoot weddings, the more you yourself begin to create your own perfect wedding. And if you could only steal only thing from each wedding the one thing I would steal from Malia and Brian's wedding would be the sand. Not the beach sand, but the sand of unity. If you look carefully, each glass already holds two different colored sands---one for the Mom and one for the Dad. They then went up and poured each of them into the glass you see to represent their union together. Now, Malia and Brian get to take their parents sand and join them together in the jar that you now see before you.
Simple and sweet.

Tada! We're married!

Hmm.......cake.

I love the fact that these two were open and willing to try anything. Clown noses, that's just funny.

It is illegal to be on the lifeguard tower? YES. Did we get caught? YES. But did we still get the shot? You betcha.

Ye Olde Wine

What happens when you have all of this wine that needs to be distributed and no pictures of the wine bottles for your website? You have your Sales guy (Steuart Martens) call Kip Pierson Photography. Stu and I have known each other a little over a year now through the DC Triathlon Club and though he'll never boast about it Steuart is one of if not the fastest swimmer I know. "Sure" you say, we all know some "fast" swimmers. No...this guy is fast...really. A former University of Purdue swimmer, this past summer Stu set a world record for the fastest swim across the San Francisco Bay. A world record! Now that's fast!

Well, needless to say, Stu is faster than me in the pool and for that he probably took pity on me and called me up to see if I could help. And though I've done ZERO product photography I was willing to explore to realm of possibilities.

Though his surname is Yingling and though he tells me he is related to the "Yuengling" lager that we all no from Pennslyvania, Richard is not old enough to drink. NO. In fact, Richard is not even old enough to drive. Yet he is old enough to graduate from high school on be on his way to Howard University to pursue acting...at the age of 15. Yes, 15 ladies and gentleman. Needless to say, I was stunned. In fact, Richard is the youngest of 3 and all of them graduated high school early and began their college career long before most even thought of going to college. How is this possible? What type of genes our his parents producing? What's their background? What kind of jobs do they have? Are his parents the best parents ever? Well, luckily for me Richard's Mom came along for the photo shoot. (After all, how was Richard going to get there? DRIVE? I don't think so.) And the answer? Home School. TADA!!! That's right, 3 kids, all home schooled, all graduating early, and all smart as a whip. Now you may say home schooled children lack the social skills necessary for everyday life...I disagree. If you were to ever meet Richard you'd agree. He's a smart, young, polite and articulate individual and with all the freedom that comes with being home schooled, Richard gets hones his "social skills" in the theatre acting with adults and other kids his own age. In fact, it was Lexi Haddad who recommended him to me--the girl who was 14 going on 30. These kids are amazing. What's not to like about being homeschooled? Best of luck to you Richard!

Taffety Punk Theatre, winner of the 1st ever John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company @ the 2008 Helen Hayes Awards, embarks on a new endeavor from playwright Gwydion Suilebhan. Directed by Artistic Director Marcus Kyd and featuring Company Member Kimberly Gilbert (both fellow Academy for Classical Acting grads like myself) , Suilebhan says that The Faithkiller is an investigation of sorts into “the difference between faith and belief.” The play’s inquiry spans history, denomination, and race, as characters grapple with thorny questions raised by the strictures and demands imposed upon them not only by Christianity, Islam, Judaism, but also by the militant, fundamentalist atheism that has appeared in recent years, most prominently in best-selling books by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens.

His plays have been produced, workshopped, read, and commissioned by the Kennedy Center, National Theater, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Mead Theatre Lab, Theater of the First Amendment, Rorschach Theatre, Intentional Theatre Group, Source Theatre Festival, and the Capitol Fringe Festival. SunTrust National Marathon

In its 4th year the 2009 SunTrust National Marathon and Half Marathon would once again see a record number of participants. With its self-imposed limit of 8,000 runners by race day, a big increase from the 5,000 registrations received in 2008, race officials made a big push and extended their marketing tour all over the country. They canvassed races up and down the East Coast, from Richmond, VA to New York---and that help spread the word about the scenic race that takes runners past monuments and historical locations. It also helped recruit more international runners than in the past.

With that said, the registration caps placed on a hometown race such as the SunTrust National Marathon allows many unseasoned marathoners the opportunity to take their first stab at the distance in an officially sanctioned race. Not too big and not too small, the National Marathon provides that "just right" feeling when one attempts their first row with the almighty 26.2 mile distance. Some win, some lose, most are sore afterwards and all are certainly proud to have accomplished what 6 months ago was an impossible and daunting task. One such individual to take on that task was Kevin Pierson: Basement dweller of 1009 Independence Ave. SE Washington, board treader of the Washington Stage, a Michael Chiklis look-alike and my brother.

Long time coach potato, 1st time marathoner. What's was once a much larger version of a brother was now toeing the line at RFK stadium Saturday morning nearly 35 lbs. lighter than we he began this transformation. Question was: Would it translate into success? The PRIMARY goal---finish the marathon. The GOAL WITHIN THE GOAL---finish in under 4:00:00. (Exactly :10 under my 1st marathon nearly ten years ago.) The IMMEDIATE goal---keep one foot in front of the other.

The morning came early than expected. My thoughts of getting up and photographing the race for him passed by in my thoughts, but a recent running injury to my right shin left me doubting my ability to move well enough to photograph him. But guilt and the inability to return to a reasonable repose gave way to better judgement. Pants on, Under Armour layered up, batteries charged and bike helmet snapped, I took off down the street in hopes of catching the action before it began...no such luck. The lead group was coming at me at full speed and my only thought was "SHIT! How am I going to find Kevin in this throng of people?" If he was smart and stuck true to his word he would find the 4:00:00 pace group leader and stay close by his side...........And so he did.

My goal today wasn't to interfere with his race. My hope was that I could be as covert as possible, but we both know that wasn't going to be possible. Over the course of 26.2 miles I was bound to be spotted, but by no means would I attempt to coach him in this race. It was his race, to be run the way he thought best and by no means was I going to even talk to him. (Though near the halfway point level heads prevailed and a brotherly word was spoken here and there.) So...with target locked in, camera switched on and table trays secured in their upright position we took off---Kevin on foot, myself by bike. This is story of Kevin Pierson, 1st time marathoner.

This is my favorites sequence of pictures from the race. There's always a story within the story. Notice Kevin pointing for the water in frame 1, eyeing the water and stretching the hand out for the water in frame 2. Then notice the intruding hand creeping into the picture in frame 2. Enter frame 3 and the thievery that then ensues. Now notice Kevin's face.

Yes, that close. It was interesting to see Kevin to go from jubilation, to exhausted, to smelling the barn and then back to jubilation. A roller coaster of emotions packed in to one tiny race.

Officially a net time of 4:02:56, but with the slow start behind the line, the chip time was 3:58:01.

As you would expect, Kevin quickly made friends with the runners around him. Kevin and David Peikin, pictured here, ran together for nearly the 1st 20 miles. Misery loves company.

Smiles return shortly after finishing, perhaps even slightly before the line. Perhaps 3 feet before the line when you're sure to finish even if you pass out---that's if you fall forward. :-)

And this year's new Miss USA is...

Come April 19th on NBC you might be hearing this phrase followed by "Miss DC!" Returning to the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, this year's THE MISS USA 2009 PAGEANT under the guise of Donald Trump will feature a 51 of the most sensational women the U.S. has to offer.

Who would have thought that a local "bathing beauty" competition spearheaded by Catalina Swimwear in Long Beach, CA would metamorphose into a landmark annual tradition with countless young women around the country vying to become Miss USA? As hundreds of millions of fans have watched in 125 different countries, the homegrown contest has evolved into a powerful, year-round, international organization that advances and supports opportunities for these role models.

Becoming what is now considered American royalty is still an obtainable dream for young women more than 50 years later. Today, Miss USA has become a fixture of pop culture, ingrained in the landscape of our minds. As the first cover subject of MS magazine's premier issue in 1969, Miss USA continues to stand proud, breaking boundaries and defining what it means to be a woman in the 21st century.

These women are savvy, goal-oriented and aware. The delegates who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals, who compete with hope of advancing their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who see to improve the lives of others. Currently, Miss USA is experiencing a rebirth, playing a critical role in making the next 100 years "The Century of Women."

At least that's what the Miss USA website and Nicole tells me. Meet Nicole White, Miss DC 2009...or rather 2008, I'm not sure. But either way, she's competing in the Miss USA 2009 Pageant and representing the good ol' "Taxation Without Representation" District of Columbia. A student at George Washington University, Nicole and I met at McCormick & Schmick's on K Street awhile back and recently she was in desperate need of some photos for the pagaent. How urgent? Well, the deadline was Friday and she called me on Tuesday -- and the only day that we were both free was Thursday morning at 7:30am. Yikes! But I think all went well. Good luck in Vegas Nicole!

Lighthouse Cycling Tour Day 3

Michelob ULTRA Lighthouse Cycling Tour of Puerto Rico -- Day 3
125 miles -- Mayaguez to Old San Juan

Day 3: Leaving at around 6:00 am (8:00 am group riders ... LIGHTS REQUIRED) we will ride east bound to Old San Juan not before riding through the world class beaches of Rincon. We will then head to Isabela for breakfast not before climbing the "Las Cascadas" hill and passing by the Aguadilla Lighthouse. The exact location for the breakfast will remain “secret” like the previous day. After filling up our bellies in the amazing location, we will head towards the Arecibo Lighthouse for lunch. This section will take us through Jobos Beach in Isabela known for its sand dunes and surfing beaches. This area is also known for its short, sharp, very steep climb to the towncore of Isabela followed by the Guajataca hill that eventually leads us to Arecibo. Lunch will take place within the Arecibo Lighthouse as a backdrop and from there we will ride through the northern coastal plains where we will see some of the most spectacular beaches on the north side of the Island reaching Dorado. In the Dorado plaza we will wait for around 15 minutes for the fast riders that departed Mayaguez at 8 am. From Dorado, we will be escorted by a police motorcade weaving through the financial district of Hato Rey and into the cobblestoned streets of the City of Old San Juan ending at the San Felipe del Morro Fort where the closing ceremonies will take place.

The finale, Day 3. Another late night and another early, early morning. Dinner last night was provided by the mayor of Mayaguez, the hotel provided a large pool and we even had a casino to gamble in -- that is of course if you didn't wear sandals, flip-flops or crocs. Side note: Some cyclists wore their bike cleats instead. For some reason, certain sandals were bad, but tearing up their carpet with cleats was super-duper. So, what was suppose to be a restful night for all, was an eventful surplus of money for a few. Either way, 5AM comes pretty fast. And with the accumulation of little sleep you might not even here it coming. That's what happened for Paul and I this morning. We sprang from our beds nearly 30 minutes after the alarm and sprung into action. Battery packs, lenses, cameras, clothes, glasses, more batteries, media cards, etc. It was a mad dash and while we scrambled with our things Eric was calmly lying in bed waiting for us to go downstairs. For those of you who don't know Eric Goetz, he's fast, really fast on a bike and this year William made a stategic move: the self-guided fast group would head out almost 2 hours AFTER the main peloton in an effort to have everyone reach Old San Juan at the same time. It was a smart move, but as Eric would recall later, it only made the fast group faster in an effort to catch the peloton.

With that said, we were on the road. It was an early start to another long day, but beautiful sights awaited us. Paul and I were producing better and better shots and with everyone wearing the Tour Jersey, the day called for plenty of peloton shots. Of course, the terrain and route were going to be an issue. Though it was only 135 miles, the sun was strong, the wind on this side of the island was great (it is every year, this year stronger than normal) and the changes in the course made it all the more difficult. Did I mention William wanted to arrive in Old San Juan by 5:30pm? Uh...yeah...that might not happen. But we're certainly going to try.

Day 3 is always the day when everyone wears the Tour's Jersey. Uniformity my good man, uniformity!

Lighthouse Cycling Tour Day 2

Michelob ULTRA Lighthouse Cycling Tour of Puerto Rico -- Day 2
100 miles -- Ponce to Mayaguez

Day 2: At 7:00 am we depart Ponce to Yauco where breakfast once again awaits in a secret historical location, however, not before passing by Guayanilla, home of the Costa Sur, an oil-fired Steam-Electric Plant where a significant amount of electric power for the island is generated. After breakfast, we move on to the ruins of the Guanica Lighthouse near the Dry Forest area of Guanica. From this area we will head to Cabo Rojo passing by the plains of Lajas. Lunch will be served nearby in Cabo Rojo immediately after passing near the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (within a mile). Later in the day, we will head to the Town of Mayaguez. Expect some heat and humidity in the Lajas-Cabo Rojo areas during noon followed by the omnipresent 2 pm showers in Mayaguez.

Ah, Day 2. Little sleep has been had by all, including me, and after staying up late into the night to get photos edited and sent to the press, our 100 mile journey was fast upon us. But first, a photo. It's early, very little light and I had just been informed that we wanted to get a group shot in front of the fire station. 300 riders, one flash and a crisp, clean photo? Uh...can we get a photographer over here? QUICKLY!!! Well, as you can imagine, my cry for help went unanswered, my throat swelled and my cotton mouth wasn't a choice but a necessity. This one shot would not prove to be my only obstacle of the day. Heat, wind, rain and a ditch would battle for supremacy for all things detrimental to my job in a day that quickly bequeathed legendary status on my involvement with the Lighthouse Cycling Tour.

"Pray, due tell KIP, what could have possibly happened?"

OK, well, for those of you who've known me long enough remember that last year when I cycled the tour, I took a nasty fall and Day 1 off the side of a mountain, falling into the guard rail, sliding across the metal while slicing open my jersey and my right tricep yet never injuring the bike...thank you very much. It required several stitches and a huge bandage, but I pressed on to the oasis for lunch and then another 60 miles to the hotel. I didn't come to Puerto Rico to stay cooped up in a hotel. That was Day 1. Now for Day 2 this year, I tried to out do myself. Remember that motorcycle that Luis was driving with me on the back? Yeah, we crashed it. Did I say crashed, I meant DESTROYED it.

It was early morning, I had just taken two of my favorite shots of the day, and before we knew it the roads had changed. If you've never been to Puerto Rico, you need to understand that though it's bright and sunny where you are, it might very well be raining 5 minutes down the road. That's exactly what happened to us...that, and a sharp turn. Only this time, it was raining, it had just rained -- that meant no one was expecting a slick road. A little water and the light dust and dirt of the island equalled disaster for Luis and I. One rider down, two riders down, everyone begins to slow, three riders down, four riders down...we were going to fast and we knew it before it happened. And then it happened: the wheel went out from underneath us, Luis tried to right the motorcycle, but it was no use. Either we were going down or...or...or...? Our best bet was going for the ditch, holding on to the turn was impossible. I don't know whether we had super hero powers and could read each others brains or we have very similar logical brains but, WE WENT FOR THE DITCH. Our luck lied in our ability to softly land the bike, brush ourselves off, count our blessings and be on our way. No such luck. The ditch proved too great and the shocks on the bike too feable. Our end was near and all I could think about was save the cameras. Anything could happen to me, but save the cameras. I grabbed both Canon 5D's, raised my arms and went for the ride of my life. Somehow, someway I rode the bike like a bull: 9 seconds! And then we crashed. Mirror gone, check. Bike completely scratched, check. Front wheel fork bent 45˚, check. The smell of spilt gasoline, check. Two saved cameras with fully intact rider and driver, SUPER check. We made it. I don't know how, but we did. Luis' wrist had to be wrapped the next day and my left knee was little bruised, but we had made it. In all 7 or 8 riders went down on that corner.

News travels fast and by the time we arrived at the 1st oasis for breakfast everyone had heard about the crash. "Are you alright? What happened? How are the cameras?" I heard this in repetition. Everyone who knew me from the year before said, "You crash a bike on Day 1 last year, destroy a motorcycle on Day 2 this year...don't get in a helicopter next year." Luckily if I come back in 2011, there isn't a Day 4 for me to crash.........................Well, that could mean my returning flight on Monday. :-o

The Parque de Bombas is a Puerto Rican building located at the town square of Ponce, known as Plaza Las Delicias, and directly behind Ponce Cathedral. The building housed the city's main fire station; its name comes from the mobile hand-pumped fire fighting units the building once housed. It has been heralded both for its historical and architectural roles in Puerto Rican society.

After last year's ride, I made sure I got this photo. Early morning of day two we biked thru one of the main Petroleum plants of Puerto Rico. The juxtaposition kills me.

Hello honey? Yeah, this might take me longer than I thought.

Though the shortest day on the tour, Day 2 had it's own set of peaks and valleys.

The tour provides an normal 15mph peloton and a faster self-guided group. And as luck would have it, both groups passed each other on an out and back.

Not the best photo of the day, but certainly my favorite. Driving ahead in the pick up I noticed the two mountain bikers ahead in white dress shirts. Yep, you guessed it. I was a little kid in a candy store bouncing with anticipation the moment the peloton would swallow them up...and...click.

Lighthouse Cycling Tour Day 1

Michelob ULTRA Lighthouse Cycling Tour of Puerto Rico -- Day 1
151.1 miles -- Old San Juan to Ponce

Day 1: Leaving way before sunrise (6:00 am fast riders - 6:10 am group riders ... remember LIGHTS REQUIRED), we will ride east bound to Fajardo where a late morning breakfast (between 8:30-10:00 am) awaits right by the Seven Seas and Las Croabas beaches. This breakfast will give you a stunning view of the eastern horizon where it is not unlikely to see the Island of Culebra and St. Thomas with the naked eye. From there we will ride southbound towards Guayama, not before crossing over “Camino Nuevo”, considered the challenge of the day. Have your camera handy for the spectacular views from this 1000 foot hilltop. Before arriving Guayama, we will stop at the Punta Tuna Lighthouse (circa 1892) in Maunabo where lunch will be served and you will be able to get up close and personal with this great historic building. We will then symbolically pass by Arroyo's Lighthouse (out of view). After a quick hydration and snack stop in Guayama we will wind up the day riding into one of the the most historical towns of the south; the Ponce Town Core. Those lucky enough to have booked a room within one of the town core options will have a chance to walk around the beautiful Plaza and its surroundings wrapping up a long day.

Day 1 started off with a bang...actually a buzz. It was the alarm on my phone vibrating. A 5am wake-up call to begin a long day arduous day. The forecast called for an unbelievable 84 degrees with slight cloud cover and no wind. A perfect day for riding. Even better yet, a perfect day for pictures. But first things first: we need to know where we are going. I mean, we know WHERE we are going routewise, but what vehicles we were going to go in remained a mystery. We had a pickup truck, 2 EMS vehicles, several SAG Vans and a motorcycle. Lots of choices, but only one with the capability to document the race entirely: the motorcycle. Riders gathered, headlights were turned on and car horns beeped. We were off into the darkness of the morning. Nearly 300 riders, a pack of extremely fit and not so fit people, descending down San Juan's streets. It was a sight to be seen. And in case you didn't see it, here you go.

It's difficult for a hand cyclist in general, but when the rest of the peloton slows down, you must let Keane keep going. You don't slow down a hand cyclist, you let him keep going.

All around the island the tour had a police escort. You certainly couldn't do this tour in the states.

This picture was the center of a full page spread in the main Puerto Rican newspaper on Sunday.

Though the police were providing a safety convoy around the island, hills will always providing a problem for the cyclists. A long uphill mountain breaks up the peloton and on a mountain like this, all hell breaks loose.

I'm proudest of this picture. It was taken from inside the lighthouse.

The mountain gets even the best of us.

Michelob ULTRA Lighthouse Cycling Tour

This past weekend was a special weekend for me: I got to return to Puerto Rico to participate in the Lighthouse Cycling Tour. Not as a cyclist, but as a photographer. Awhile back, Executive Director William Medina was on Facebook of all things and noticed a few photos I posted online. Unbeknownst to William, he was about to stumble upon his official photographer for the 2009 Tour and I was about to get a gig that was beyond my wildest dreams. An avid cyclist, a fan of the sun and a big believer in what the tour is and will become, I jumped at the chance to hang up my bike shoes and capture what is in my opinion, one of the best cycling events/tours the world has to offer. If you don't believe me, just take a look.

The 2009 Michelob ULTRA Lighthouse Cycling Tour of Puerto Rico is a 3 day, 375 miles tour covering 9 historical lighthouses of Puerto Rico. The three day, recreational, non competitive cycling adventure will circle the entire Island of Puerto Rico passing through 43 coastal towns and everything in between. Day 1 ends in Ponce, Day 2 leads to Mayaguez with Day 3 coming full circle to the city of Old San Juan. It's a breathtaking ride. But don't get too comfortable, they're are plenty of hills...lots and lots of hills. Tons of hills. (Did I say there were hills?)

So, I flew in Wednesday afternoon, checked into the Casablanca Hotel and promptly realized I left my Macbook Pro on the plane!!! A $3,000 computer blindly left in the magazine holder in the seat in front of me as I left the plane...needless to say, the scariest moment of my life. Hundreds of files potentially gone, hours of work to be redone and of course I would need to buy another computer. ARGHHH!!! Panic pulsed thru my veins and it was a mad dash to the phone. As I called so did the desk clerk at the hotel, and would you believe it, I get an answering machine at baggage claim. An answering machine!?!?!? I needed help now. Who knows what would happen if that plane takes off. Plus, without the computer, editing photos or downloading them would be impossible. And at that very split second of thought, the desk clerk says they have it. Apparently, whatever number she called, put her in touch with the on duty supervisor who at that very moment was handed the computer seconds before she answered the phone. WOW! Crisis averted, I paid the $40 round trip cab ride back to the airport and eventually readied myself for Thursday's meet and greet ride followed by a press conference and the registration, concluding with a nice pasta dinner. Day 1 was going to be tough and I was nervous, but today was going to give me a chance to work with the motorcycle/driver in order to coordinate the best possible scenario for taking some great photos. I kept my fingers crossed.

This family-run bakery and coffee shop was founded in 1902. The counter is long and the booths are many, but you have to get there as early as you can to avoid waiting in line. The shop fills with locals trading gossip and slowly eating their breakfasts. You have to try the mallorca con mantequilla (a round, flat pastry dusted with confectioner’s sugar and served with butter). On Thursday morning, LCT had a special "get to know each other" ride for their friends from out of the country and we all met here.

I guess it's not every day that students in Puerto Rico get to see a hand cyclist, but today was there lucky day. Keane was gracious enough to spend some time with the students answering questions and showing them how he moves and brakes with the chair.

Back in October I got to go along with a good friend and fellow photographer Kim Seidl to the Rose Hill Manor in Leesburg, Virginia for Brian and Katie's wedding. The weather was great, the sky was blue and they both looked fantastic. Special thanks to Kim for letting me tag along. Love ya Kim!
